- Max Brand is the most familiar of the more than 20 names under which Frederick Schiller Faust wrote over 300 novels--westerns, spy novels, mysteries, adventure tales, historical fiction--in addition to poetry, movie scripts, and war reports. Brand's popular westerns are credited with moving the genre from historical action dramas to the level of myth. He offered bigger-than-life heroes operating under a strong moral code in fast-paced adventure tales set against the rugged landscape of his imaginary High Mountain Desert.
