- Summary
- There are two items in this collection. The first is a certificate from the Commonwealth of Virginia, to William P. Kimbel, commissioning him as Colonel of the 119th Regiment, 10th Brigade, 3rd Division of the Virginia Militia, from the 24th of September 1858, and signed by Governor Henry A. Wise on October 5, 1858. A green state seal is in the lower left corner. The other item is a printed page from the "Library Scrapbook" with an engraving of Governor Wise along with a biography, noting his death on September 12 [1876]. The continuation of the article is missing
- Biographical or historical data
- Born on December 3, 1806, in Drummondtown, Virginia, Henry Alexander Wise graduated from Washington College, Pennsylvania, at the age of 19. He was admitted to the bar in 1828, and elected to Congress five years later. President John Tyler appointed him as Minister to Brazil in 1843. He was elected governor of Virginia in 1855 and served until 1860. During the Civil War, Governor Wise was with the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia as a major-general. He died on September 12, 1876, at the age of 69, and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.
