Description: Pulitzer Prize-winning Canadian author Carol Shields wrote novels and short stories that are at once wise, literary, and penetrating. Using graceful, luminous prose and finely drawn characters, she explored the lives of ordinary people transformed by normal events, extraordinary circumstances, happenstance, and the times in which they lived. Although she sometimes wrote about men, most of her work focused on the lives of twentieth-century women. Shields, who died in 2003, also wrote a biography of Jane Austen, nonfiction pieces on the lives of women, and edited collections of short stories by other authors.
