- The first of the three folders contains a handwritten copy of Mr. Connelly's Civil War diary as well as small, original diary from 1863. The second folder contains a copy of the transcript compiled by his daughter. The third folder contains the original transcript.The diary begins in August 1861 and goes to September 1863. During his service, Lt. Connelly fought under General Grant at Fort Donelson; at the Battle of Shiloh; at the siege of Corinth; and was in General Buell's army through northern Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee. He was led by General Rosecrans and Thomas at Stone River and Chickamauga, where he received the injury that ended his military career

- Jesse B. Connelly (1st Decemeber, 1836 - 29th April, 1920) was born in Parke County Indiana and educated at Bloomingdale Academy and Asbury College (Now DePauw University). In 1861 he enlisted in Company I of the 31st Indiana Volunteer Infantry and was promoted to the rank of 2nd lieutenant in April of 1862. He was injured in the Battle of Chickamauga and although he attempted to return to serivce, he was found physically unfit and was honorably discharged from the Army on April 9, 1864.After the war he married his first wife Mary E. Edwards (d.1876) and had 3 children. He remarried to Rebecca A. Weed (d.1882) in 1877 and was finally married to Marth Rogers Magill in 1883, who survived him.He was an active citizen, holding many public offices in Parke County, including auditor and school board president.
