- Description
- Rex Stout wrote "armchair detective" mysteries featuring that brilliant agoraphobic Montenegrin, Nero Wolfe - gourmand and orchid fancier. Narrator Archie Goodwin does the legwork; police Inspector Cramer serves as an obnoxious foil. Stout plays fair by giving readers the same access to clues as the characters. Leisurely pacing allows readers to enjoy the strong sense of place and the often humorous descriptions and dialog. Violence generally occurs off-screen. Although Wolfe himself is a misogynist, Stout's female characters are intelligent, capable women with interesting personalities. Stout wrote several non-Wolfe mysteries, too. His novels appeal to teens and adults. Start with: Black Orchids
