- James Steel, a Quaker, married Martha Hammond in 1697 at Arundel, Sussex, England. They, with two daughters, immigrated to Philadelphia, in 1702. They moved to Duck Creek, New Castle, Delaware. Martha died there in 1709. He and his family moved back to Philadelphia in 1711, where he married widow Martha Bowen in 1711. He was the father of twelve children. It is not known if any were the children of his second wife. James died ca. 1742 at Philadelphia. His son, Robert Steel (ca. 1703-before 1741), married Elizabeth Hunter of Newtown, Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1722 at Philadelphia. They had four children, 1723-1732. Descendants listed, especially some descendants of his grandson, William N. Steel (1793-1856) of Philadelphia, Indiana and Crawford County, Illinois, lived in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Texas, Oklahoma and elsewhere
