- Known only as Kingbird and riding a black mare named Molly that can outrun any horse on the range, the notorious outlaw again gets a chance to prove himself impervious when he becomes the focus of an all-out pursuit by Marshal Jim Hampton and a large posse. Kingbird eludes the posse, only to sneak into their camp to confront the marshal where he is sleeping apart from his men. During their exchange, Kingbird learns that he was betrayed by the woman he thought loved him, Inez Ramirez. Barely escaping from the camp, Kingbird rides to Valencia, where he confirms the marshal's claim. He then goes to visit the Blair family -- the only ones he feels he can trust. Learning that their daughter, Helena, has left unexpectedly, he promises the family that he will find her and bring her back to them. It doesn't take long to discover that she is traveling with outlaws and has been hired to nurse one who has been injured. What should have been an easy rescue turns into a relentless pursuit as setbacks only serve to strengthen his determination to succeed
