- Forced to leave home, orphaned Annie Paxton and her two brothers hope for better things in St. Joseph, Missouri. The Paxtons have only just arrived when the brothers spot the as: "Wanted," it reads, "Young, skinny fellows not over eighteen. Must be expert riders and willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred." Without consulting Annie, her brothers land jobs as riders and arrange for her to be the cook at a remote Pony Express station in Nebraska Territory. But when each of her brothers is pulled away by his own crisis, Annie is left alone in the struggle to discover what she really wants out of life--and the true meaning of the word home
