- The collection contains Turpie's manuscripts copy of Sketches of My Own Time (1903), minutes of Fiat Lux (Indianapolis literary society) from 1875 to 1876, and his speeches on literary and political issues
- Biographical or historical data
- David Turpie was a U.S. Senator from Indiana. Born July 8, 1828 in Hamilton County, Ohio, Turpie studied law with intermittent forays into politics. Turpie was admitted to the bar in 1849, and practiced law in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana until 1852 when he was elected into the Indiana State House of Representatives. In 1863, Turpie was elected to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacated seat of Jesse D. Bright. Following the year in Senate, Turpie returned to Indianapolis to continue practicing law. Turpie was again elected to the U.S. Senate, as a Democrat, in 1887, serving until 1899. Turpie died April 21, 1909 in Indianapolis; interment in Crown Hill Cemetery.
