- Ralph McInerny taught at Notre Dame University and also wrote a number of mysteries, both stand-alone and series (like the Father Dowling books, adapted for TV). His characters are sympathetic, if rather stereotypical, and include Catholic priests and nuns as well as policemen. Investigative characters rely on their logical assessment of clues plus hunches. Stories are quickly paced with very little violence and satisfying endings. His series books need not be read in order. He also wrote mysteries under the pen names Monica Quill and Edward Mackin.
