- Although he never attained the stature of his colleague and friend Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins remains an important figure in 19th century English literature. Collins is considered to have written the first mystery novel (The Woman in White) and the first detective novel (The Moonstone). While these established his reputation, he also wrote essays, short stories, plays, and more than 20 novels. Praised for his skill in plotting, Collins wrote melodramatic and sensational novels, published serially, which addressed serious social issues and provided surprising psychological insights.
