Established in 1918, St. Rita Catholic Church serves the African American residents of Indianapolis's northeast side. In August 1936, Father Bernard L. Strange, a native of Bramble, Indiana, was appointed as pastor of St. Rita Catholic. Father Strange was a strong supporter of and dedicated his life to securing civil rights for African Americans.
