- The collection consists of Capehart's senatorial papers (1944-1963), particularly papers relating to national defense, the Banking and Currency Committee, the Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee, and the Foreign Affiars Committee; military and Defense Department papers include papers relating to Indiana soldiers serving in World War II and Korea, Air Force Academy, Defense Production Acts (1950's), U.S. Guided Missile program (1958), the Mutual Security Progam (1955), Universal Military Training Bill (1948), civil defense, military surpluses, and other defense matters relating to military installations in Indiana--Jefferson Proving Grounds, Crane Naval Ammunition Depot, and Bunker Hill Naval Air Station. Also included are Banking and Currency Committee papers relating to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the FDIC, the Federal Reserve System, the Office of Price Administration (1946-1953), the federal budget (1947-1962), Atomic Energy Commission, the Federal Power Commissions, foreign oil and oil shortages (1947-1950), railroads, Federal Trade Commission, interstate highways, Foreign Affairs Committee papers relating to NATO, the Korean War, the St. Lawrence Seaway, Capehart's proposed European Recovery Program (1948-1949), foreign aid bills, his Latin American trip (1953); papers on labor legislation, including the Fair Employment Act (1948), minimum wage legislation (1961), disability programs, and the Dept. of Labor; papers relating to the federal housing programs, including the 1954 Housing Act, FHA and VH loans, and Capehart's Depreciation and Amortization bill (1957-1958); papers relating to federal agricultural programs, including the Rural Electrification Administration, the creation of an International Food Community, the Farmer's Home Administration and Capehart's 1959 farm bill. Other topics include: Alaskan statehood, anti-communism, federal aid to education, the Food and Drug Administration, immigration and naturalization, the Niagara Falls Development (1951-1954), the U.S Post Office, the Public Welfare Act (1953), the Small Business Committee, and taxes.
