Biographical or historical data
William Herbert Hudnut III was born on October 17, 1932, in Cincinnati, Ohio to William H. Hudnut Jr and Elizabeth Allen Kilborne. He graduated from Princeton University in 1954 and the Union Theological Seminary in New York in 1957. He worked as a Presbyterian minister in Buffalo, New York from 1957-1960 and Annapolis, maryland from 1960-1963 before moving to Indianapolis to serve at the Second Presbyterian Church from 1963-1972. He was then elected to the House of Representatives in the 93rd Congress as a Republican representative for Indiana's 11th district and served from January 3, 1973 through January 3, 1975. As a representaitve he served on the Public Health and Environment Subcommittee as well as the Appropriations Committee. After failing to win reelection to Congress, Hudnut moved on to win a bid for the Indianapolis mayoral campaign in 1975 and was sworn in on January 1, 1976. He was reelected as mayor three times, serving in the position until January 1, 1992. Hudnut later moved to Chevy Chase, Maryland where he served as mayor from 2002 until 2004.
