- Biographical or historical data
- Due to an economic depression begun in 1893, the central issue during the 1896 United States presidential election was whether to base the country's money supply on the gold standard or on free silver. The Republican candidate, William McKinley, supported the gold standard, while the Democrats' candidate, William Jennings Bryan, supported the use of both gold and silver. McKinley defeated Bryan both in the popular vote and the electoral college to become the 25th president of the United States.Source:"United States presidential election of 1896."
