Summary
This collection consists of four documents. The oldest is dated December 26, 1812, and certifies that Whorton Ransdall is a private in a company of the Kentucky Militia. He entered service on August 17, 1812, and was discharged December 16, 1812. The next three documents pertain to Wharton R. Clinton. Two documents are from the Civil War and have a similar heading. The first large document appointed Wharton R. Clinton as captain of the Ninth Ward Guard of the Militia, and is dated July 10, 1863. The 2nd Civil War certificate is dated August 14, 1863, and appointed Wharton as Major in the First City Regiment, Indianapolis. The last document is dated December 29, 1885, and is signed by George W. Koontz, Adjutant General of Indiana. He certified that Wharton was a sergeant in Company D, Fourth Mexican War Regiment, from May 28, 1847 until his discharge on July 16, 1848
Biographical or historical data
Wharton R. Clinton was born in Kentucky in 1826. In 1850, he was living in Marion County, Indiana with his wife Nancy. On July 10, 1863, Governor Morton commissioned Wharton R. Clinton as Captain of the Ninth Ward Guard in Marion County. On August 14, 1863, Governor Morton appointed him major in the First City Regiment, Indianapolis. The 1870 federal census lists him in Pike Township, Marion County, with his wife Mary F., age 38; son Alonzo, age 16; daughter Emma, age 11; and daughter Mary E., age 9. On December 29, 1885, the Adjutant General of Indiana certified that Wharton was enrolled as a sergeant of Company D, Fourth Mexican War Regiment at Jeffersonville, Indiana, on May 28, 1847 and was mustered out on July 16, 1848. The 1900 federal census lists Wharton, age 74, living in Indianapolis with his son-in-law, Charley W. Eichradt, age 37; Mary E. Eichradt, age 38; Charles W. Eichradt, age 10; and Emma L. Clinton, age 40. Ten years later, in 1910, Wharton, a widower, lived in Ward 8 of Indianapolis with Martha Eichrodt, age 49; Charles W. Eichrodt, age 20; and Emma S. Cllinton, age 51. He died on February 1, 1914, and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
