Summary
This collection includes Valentine`s Day cards from Hazel Hopper in Indiana ranging from 1881 to 1931
Biographical or historical data
Valentines Day is based on both Christian and Roman tradition. The Catholic Church declared February 14th to be St. Valentines Day in the 5th century to commemorate the anniversary of Valentines death, of which there were three with storys of love in their histories. Others believe that it was an attempt to change the pagan celebration of Lupercalia, which was still being celebrated, into a Christian celebration. The oldest known valentine still in existance was written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisioned. By the 18th century it was common for friends and lovers to exchange tokens of affection on Valentines Day. In the 1900s printed cards began to replace handwritten notes due to improvments in printing. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling mass produced valentines around the United States, she is now known as the "Mother of Valentine." (History.com, 2009)
