Searle (p. 181), is an extract of a letter from Searle submitted to the Boston Recorder, dated October 2, 1820. Searle's letter discusses his observations of the church ministry and school education in the rural Dutch settlement between Vevay and Madison, Indiana

- Biographical or historical data
- Reverend Thomas Colman Searle was born in Massachusetts on January 15, 1787 to Joseph and Molly (Coleman) Searle. He and his wife, Annette (Woodward), were parents of at least two children. On June 13, 1817, Searle was chosen professor of Logic, Metaphysics and Ethics at Dartmouth College. By the 1820 US Census, Searle was included as resident of Jefferson, Indiana. On January 9, 1821, the Indiana General Assembly appointed Searle as representative of Jefferson County to draft and report a bill (among others) providing for a general system of education.
