Summary
This collection comprises two letters from Theophilus Adam Wylie in Bloomington, Indiana in 1850 regarding the discovery of gold in Indiana between Wylie and Professor John F. Frazer at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Biographical or historical data
Theophilus Adam Wylie was born to Reverend Samuel Brown Wylie and Mrs. Margaret Watson on October 8, 1810 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Wylie married Rebecca Dennis and they had six children together: Elizabeth Lousia, Richard Dennis, Susan Emma, Samuel Brown, Theophilus Andrew, and Samuel Brown. Wylie was an early professor at Indiana University. Since the school was still a small college at the time, Wylie taught most subjects offered, from math to science, Greek to chemistry. He was also the school's first librarian, and even worked as a groundskeeper. Theophilus Wylie also served as interim president of the university for six months in 1859. On June 16, 1895, Wylie died in Bloomington, Indiana.Sources:Items in the collection.Trustees of Indiana University. "Theophilus Adam Wylie." Wylie House Museum. Last updated November 16, 2010.
