Biographical or historical data
The Prohibition Party is the oldest minor political party in the United States. It was founded in 1869 and members campaigned for legislation that would prohibit the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors. The Prohibition Party of Indiana was established in 1884 and the following year the state's official prohibition newspaper, Indiana Phalanx, began publishing. In 1894, the publishers of the Phalanx began printing The Seed Sower, a cheap weekly campaign newspaper issued under the supervision of the state committee to generate more votes for the Prohibition Party candidates. The first "specimen" copies were distributed at the state convention on March 15, 1894 and members were encouraged to buy multiple copies to distribute in their communities.Sources:[The Seed Sower] Indiana Phalanx, March 1, 1894. p.4, col. 1.
