This collection comrpises one newspaper sheet, printed on both sides, of the Indianapolis Daily Journal on August 2, 1864 regarding the exposure of the Sons of Liberty as an anti-Lincoln group of men in the Midwest. The report identifies the society's leadership, goals, rituals, and passwords
Biographical or historical data
The Sons of Liberty was a secret society, during the U.S. Civil War, who were opposed the Lincoln administration and advocated absolute state sovereignty. They were Democrats and Copperheads. Their group died out when the Confederacy lost the war. The society's Indiana commander was Harrison Dodd. The supreme commander was Clement Vallandigham. Other leaders, called "major generals," were Bowles, Milligan, Walker, and Humphries.
