Jacob Upp was born around 1751 in Little York, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Sprinkle, daughter of Michael Sprinkle, in 1778. They had a son, named John, in 1781. The Upp and Sprinkle families traveled by boat to the Falls of the Ohio, an established settlement of emigrants. In search of rock to create a blacksmith shop, Jacob was captured by Indians. He escaped imprisonment around Henderson, Kentucky after almost two years in captivity. The following spring, in 1793, John was 12 years old. Together with Peter Sprinkle, George Sprinkle and Isaac Knight, they crossed the Ohio River, near Henderson. Peter Sprinkle and John's little brother was killed by Indians. George, Isaac and John were taken prisoner. They traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana where negotiations resulted in his freedom. John was reunited with relatives in Vincennes, Indiana.
