Biographical or historical data
Shortridge High School was the first public high school in Indianapolis, originally called Indianapolis High School. It was renamed Shortridge H.S. in 1897, in honor of Abram C. Shortridge, Superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools. It moved to its current location at Meridian and 34th Streets in 1928. It published the first daily student newspaper, the Shortridge Daily Echo. It was closed in 1981 due to budgetary concerns, then the Indianapolis Public School System reopened Shortridge as a middle school in 1984, continuing until the spring of 2009. In the fall of 2009, the school reopened its doors to high school students under the name of Shortridge Magnet High School for Law and Public Policy, serving 6th through 12th grade students, with its first class to graduate in 2012. Its past graduates have included such luminaries as Senator Richard Lugar, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Mary Ritter Beard and Madelyn Pugh, of the "I Love Lucy" writing staff.Stahly, Ted. (1994).
