Summary
This collection contains correspondence and documents of the Sherwood family of Franklin County, Indiana ranging from 1816 to 1955. The collection includes a typewritten copy of the 1816 plat of Greensboro (now known as Blooming Grove), Franklin County, Indiana originally platted by James Sherwood and his brother-in-law John Naylor; an undated hand drawn plat of Blooming Grove noting locations of some businesses; a February 10, 1817 bond between Sherwood, Naylor and William Templeton; a November 13, 1818 document of Sherwood's appointment as county constable; James Sherwood's September 30, 1864 Civil War draft notice; Elizabeth "Lizzie" Sanders' teaching licenses for Franklin County (1872-1876); a program for the National Normal School's eighteenth annual commencement in August, 1873; a November 25, 1878 subscription letter and envelope from the Live Patron Weekly of Springfield, Ohio; correspondence from attorney S.S. Harrell to Elizabeth Sanders regarding the sale of land (February to June, 1880); family correspondence including a March 14, 1894 letter to Elizabeth from her sister Ida and a November 15, 1919 letter to "Dear Cousin" from Mrs. Millie Sherwood (Mary Sherwood?); a Westport High School alumni publication from 1949; two facsimiles of confederate bills, one printed in 1954 and one undated with W.M. McCleery's Novelty Store advertisement on the back; undated Franklin County Democratic ticket advertisements for Reuben D. Logan and Mattias M. Moore; a document listing the birthdates of some of William and Esther Naylor's children and a handwritten biographical link between President Herbert Hoover and the Sherwood family.This collection also includes oversize items (OB107), comprising a September 18, 1820 indenture between James and Nancy Sherwood and William Davis; an August 14, 1834 land grant to John Williams; two land grants given to Milton Ladd Crawley on October 16, 1835 and April 18, 1837; and an April 18, 1837 land grant to Joshua Sylvester Keirn
Biographical or historical data
The Sherwoods were early pioneers of Franklin County, Indiana. James Sherwood was born around 1783 in Maryland. He married Nancy Naylor (1785-1861) on February 5, 1805 and they had eleven children. The family moved from Maryland to Blooming Grove Township in Franklin County in 1812. James passed away at the age of 75 on February 17, 1858.James and Nancy's son William was born in Greensboro, Maryland on December 25, 1811. William married Mary Wiggins (1814-1891) on November 19, 1833 and they had thirteen children, including sons James and Oscar. James was born on August 28, 1834 and he was married twice, first to Nancy M. Taylor (1832-1899) and then to Mary E. Kilburn (1848-1933) in 1900. He passed away on April 4, 1928. Oscar was born September 17, 1853 and he married Elizabeth A. Sanders on January 13, 1881. Elizabeth was born in Bartholomew County, Indiana in 1853 and was a school teacher in Franklin County prior to their marriage. She and Oscar had four children and lived in East Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana. Elizabeth died on July 14, 1896 of typhoid fever and Oscar passed away at the age of 69 on November 2, 1922.
