Biographical or historical data
Samuel B. Woods was born to Bartlett (a native of England) and Ann [Anna] Eliza [Elisa] (Sigler) Woods (of the state of Virginia, then later of Lake County, Indiana) on Jan. 7, 1856 in Indiana. Bartlett served as a Lake County Commissioner, then in the Indiana General Assembly, in the House in 1861 and 1865, and he wrote extensively. Bartlett and Ann had eleven children, three of whom died in infancy or early childhood, those living into adulthood including Caroline, William, Jefferson, Samuel, Charlotte, Henry, Walter and Arthur. Sam married Mellue [Melluyma] C. Vilmer on Mar. 15, 1882 in Lake County, and they had three children; Harold E., Whilma, and Margaret. He was a farmer, who specialized in dairy farming, and writer. He wrote "WOODS: The First Hundred Years of Lake Co., Indiana, as lived and acted by Bartlett Woods and family and Sam B. Woods and family" in 1936, as well as many newspaper articles and opinion pieces. Sam died in 1956 and is buried in the Maplewood Historic Cemetery in Crown Point, Indiana.
