Summary
A compilation of newspaper clippings, correspondence, letters, and other materials documenting the history of St. Rita Catholic Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. Established in 1918, St. Rita Catholic Church serves the African American residents of Indianapolis's northeast side. In August 1936, Father Bernard L. Strange, a native of Bramble, Indiana, was appointed as pastor of St. Rita Catholic. Father Strange was a strong supporter of and dedicated his life to securing civil rights for African Americans. Father Strange aided in the desegration of Catholic high schools in Indianapolis, was a membership chairman of the Indianapolis Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), participated in the March on Washington, D.C. with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and protested against former Alabama Governor George Wallace's bid for U.S. President during the Indiana presidential primary. Father Strange served at St. Rita Catholic Church until 1973 when he was appointed as pastor of Francis De Sales Church. He retired in 1976 and began ministering to patients at St. Vincent Hospital and residents at Marquette Manor. Father Strange passed away at the age of 81, on Thursday, September 24, 1987 in Indianapolis, Indiana
