Biographical or historical data
Charles Philpott and Elizabeth Philpott came to America from Gloucester, England in 1730 and settled in Charles County, Maryland. They had five children: John, Barton, William, Eleanor, and Elizabeth. Eleanor married James Taylor and they had a son named Charles Philpott Taylor. William Philpott's son, John, had a daughter named Louisa (1810-1868) and she married John Ludlow (1800-1881). Louisa was a native of South Carolina and moved with her father to Indiana when it was still a territory. John moved to Fayette County, Indiana from Clermont County, Ohio in 1826. They had four children, including their son Henry Lewis (1838-1881). Henry Lewis married Isabella Smiley Clemens (1833-1917), the daughter of Ross Smiley, in 1864. Ross Smiley came to Fayette County from Hamilton County, Ohio in 1830. John and Louisa had five children, including Ross S. (1867-1955) and Louis L. (1873-1950), a newspaper reporter and United States Representative from Indiana's Seventh District. Sources:Barrows, Frederic Irving, Ed.
