Biographical or historical data
  • "The White Rose Among the Miamis" is a pageant based upon Winger's book, "The Lost Sister among the Miamis", a biography on Frances Slocum. Frances Slocum was captured as a child by the Miami Indians from her Pennsylvania home in 1778. She was found in 1837 living in Indiana among the Miamis, who called her the White Rose of the Miamis.
  • Author Otho Winger was born in Grant County, Indiana, on October 23, 1877 to John and Mary Ann (Smith) Winger. Following his graduation from Manchester College in 1898, Winger attended the University of Indiana, where he earned the degree of Master of Arts. Winger spent most of his career at Manchester College, serving as its president from 1911-1941. Winger's interest in Native American history began during his youth, growing up in Grant County near Indiana's last Indian reservation. Winger's publications include, The Life of Elder R. H. Miller, History of the Church of the Brethren in Indiana, and The Lost Sister among the Miamis. Otho Winger died August 13, 1946.Sources:North Manchester Historical Society (www.nmanchesterhistory.org)http://www.findagrave.com
