Biographical or historical data
The Monday Club began with an invitation by the Reverend Lucas, pastor, to the ladies of Central Christian Church, to form a cultural group, in February 1895, as the idea of Mrs. Thomas. Two of the original members, Mrs. P.H. Jameson and Mrs. Thomas, were daughters of Ovid Butler, president of Butler College. Eight ladies met as "The Zerelda Wallace Conversation Club" (in honor of a founding member of the church, pioneer temperance leader in Indiana, the first woman to plead for women's suffrage before the General Assembly and the wife of a former governor) but later renamed it "The Monday Club" in 1897. The motto was "In large things, unity; in small things, liberty: in all things, charity". They started as a study and literary club, then became active in local social causes and charitable organizations. Membership was limited, and members were elected. They met twice a month initially, originally in members' homes, then in other buildings, returning to home meetings in 1968. The club was affiliated with the Indianapolis Council of Women ((originally the Local Council, a federation of thirty-four women's organizations in 1892, founded by May Wright Sewall, among others), beginning in 1897. It became affiliated with the General Federation of Women's Clubs in 1934. Programs included book reviews and study, papers read by members or guests, music, pitch ins, a June outing, and their annual anniversary celebration. The 75th anniversary was celebrated in 1970. Information found within the collection. [Organization of the Local Council] 1892/01/04. Print. ISLO 374.2, #18 `
