Summary
This collection includes correspondence as well as photographs, postcards, legal documents, and writings created by members of both Carr and Sargeant families. Early correspondence is primarily addressed to Carrie B. Sargeant prior to her marriage. Additional correspondence consists of letters from Michael Carr other members of the family to Carrie and Cyril Carr. Later correspondence largely consists of letters from Cyril S. Carr to his mother and father from Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana and from La Belle, France during World War I
Biographical or historical data
  • Michael W. Carr was born in Leitram County, Ireland, April 15, 1851 and immigrated to Toledo, Ohio in 1861 with his father. He attended the University of Louisville and later the University of Notre Dame. After his graduation, he entered the field of journalism and published the Toledo Review for five years during the 1870's. In 1887, he moved to Indianapolis and became one of the editors for the Indianapolis Sentinel. He also served as editor of the Pen Magazine, authored "A History of Catholicity in Northern Ohio", and was president of the Catholic Historical Society. He married Carrie Belle Sargeant of Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1889 and they had one son, Cyril. He was a member of the American Legion for 25 years and passed away April 30, 1922 in Indianapolis.Source: Collection inventory; obituary.
  • Carrie Belle Carr nĂ© Sargeant was born November 28, 1869 in Chicago, Illinois and died May 14, 1962 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She married Michael William Carr in 1889 in Waukesha, Wisconsin and lived in Indianapolis from 1890 until her death. They had one son, Cyril Sargeant Carr. She was a member of the Proctor Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral Parish.Source: "Carrie B. Sargeant Carr".
