Summary
There are six items in this collection which make reference to New Harmony, Indiana; Robert Dale Owen; and I. W. Swift. (1) Letter to Hon. M.R. Southard, Indianapolis, dated December 12, 1838, from R. D. Owen in New Harmony. He mentions that Mrs. Southard, who "has not been well, is, as I hear, much better today." (2) Letter to M. R. Southard, Member of the legislature (he was a Representative), Indianapolis, dated December 26, 1839, from I. W. Swift in New Harmony. This letter requests that Mr.Southard amend a law regarding merchants selling in other counties with a license they took out for just three or four days. (3) Letter to Honorable M. R. Southard, Indianapolis, dated January 29, 1840, from R. D. Owen, with an additional paragraph by Richard Owen. This letter deals with a check which Robert Dale Owen endorsed against his better judgment. Richard's note at the end of the letter asked Representative Southard to "obtain the arms" for the New Harmony Volunteers. (4) An undated family tree chart giving the descendants of Robert Owen and his wife Caroline Dale, daughter of David Dale. The information was furnished by Col. Julien Dale Owen, widower. (5) Clipping from the July 12, 1929 front page of The New Harmony Times reporting "The Fourth Past and Present." The article tells about the 1840 celebration of the 4th of July in New Harmony in which Col. M. R. Southard served as Vice President of the Committee of Arrangements. (6) An undated, hand-written note on the imprinted letterhead of Lillian E. Southard, 2 Seminary Court, Greencastle, Indiana, which states: "Matthew Ritchie Southard born in Kentucky in 1800, married in New Harmony. Letters of Robert Dale Owen property of Chas. F. and Lillian E. Southard."
