This collection includes Lucien V. Rule's typewritten copies of correspondence of the Barbour family (1853-1862) and his personal and professional correspondence, documents, and newspaper clippings regarding his family, ministry, and historical and literary pursuits (1921-1923). The collection also includes copies of Rule's poems and essays, including "Samuel Shannon, Giant of God in Old Salem Presbytery," "Pen Portraits of Presbyterian Pioneers," and "Dupes of Destiny: Tragic and Bitter Romance of Christopher Harrison and Elizabeth Patterson" (1934-1943)
Biographical or historical data
Lucien V. Rule was born on August 29, 1872 in Oldham County, Kentucky to Rev. John and Mary Rule. He graduated from Centre College (Danville, Kentucky) in 1893 and received an honorary doctor-of-letters from the college in 1939. He was an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church and served congregations in Kentucky and Southern Indiana and as chaplain of the old Indiana Reformatory at Jeffersonville for 9 years. He was an author of several books of poetry, history, and sociology and was the historian of the Presbyterian Synod of Indiana for more than twenty years. He married Ida Lee McClure on June 6, 1916 and they had one daughter. He passed away at the age of 75 on February 13, 1948. Sources: "Dr. Rule Rites Are Conducted."
