Summary
This collection contains a typewritten copy of "Diary - Eight Hundred Miles -Twenty Six Days - Covered Wagon - 1862 - Wyandott County, Ohio - Carroll County, Iowa" by Mary Alice Shutes made and copyrighted in 1967 from a copy created by Julia Curtis, Mary Alice Shutes Mallory's daughter, under the supervision of her mother. Mary Alice Shutes Mallory kept the diary, along with her stepmother, Ann, while the family traveled from Ohio to Iowa in 1862. The collection also includes copies of "Stack Thrashing - Ioway - 1890's" written by LeRoy L. Shutes in 1968 and "Indian Trails Paved Over," a narrative of stories told in three parts - "Before this Continent was America", "Marseilles, Ohio in the Eighteen Hundred Sixties", and "Ohio to Iowa in 1862" - that were told to Shutes by his grandfather, Gerathmil Hiram Shutes, and copyrighted by LeRoy in 1971. "Ioway" was how Mary Alice and LeRoy referred to Iowa in their writings
