Biographical or historical data
Karl John Schoen was born on October 20, 1894 to John, tailor and president of Schoen Brothers Cleaners, and Effie M. (Johnston) Schoen in Indianapolis, Indiana. Schoen graduated from Manual Training High School in 1913, and attended Purdue University with his brothers. In 1917, he married Maurene Luft, and joined the Purdue Unit at the first Officers0́9 Training Camp at Fort Benjamin Harrison. Schoen served as a 1st lieutenant and World War I flying ace, credited with seven aerial victories while flying a Spad XIII for the United States Army Air Service during World War I. He perished when his plane was shot down on October 29, 1918, leaving behind his widow, Maurine, and a 10-month-old daughter.
