- This collection includes three clippings of the newspaper column, "A Hoosier Listening Post," written by Kate Milner Rabb. The 1931 columns ran in the Indianapolis Star on September 22, 23 and 25. Each column quotes from the papers of Joseph Tarkington and discusses items of interest, including a scholarship founded by Tarkington at Indiana Asbury University; an October 4, 1864 certificate stating that Mrs. Tarkington had contributed to the Indiana State Sanitary Fair for the relief of sick and wounded soldiers; a certificate from the quartermaster's department of the Army regarding the sale at auction of "one brown mule branded U.S. and S."; a June 7, 1855 letter written by Asbury president Daniel Curry to Rev. F.A. Hester regarding a "Mr. Hester" and the reason for not awarding him the first honor at graduation; and Tarkington's bills for books he purchased from the Methodist Book Concern in Cincinnati

- Rev. Joseph Tarkington was born on October 30, 1800 at Nashville, Tennessee to Jesse and Mary Tarkington. He moved with his family to Indiana in 1815 and the family later settled in Monroe County. He was converted to the Christian faith at a camp meeting in 1820 and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church the following June. He became a circuit rider and rode the circuit for more than forty years. He married Maria Slauson (1806-1889) in 1831 and they had seven children. At the time of his death at the age of 91 on September 22, 1891, he was said to be the oldest Methodist minister in Indiana. Sources: Ancestry.com.
