Biographical or historical data
Dr. Joseph Gardner was a physician from Bedford, Indiana. He also served in the Indiana General Assembly. His third wife, Enola, worked as Clara Barton's secretary and the two became very active in the Red Cross. Their Lawrence County farm eventually served as a national headquarters and retreat for the American Red Cross until it was destroyed in 1904. Source: "With Humanity, Towards Peace".
