Biographical or historical data
John Englebrecht Bruns was born in Leer, Germany, on July 3, 1845. When he was ten years old, he became a sailor. In 1859, Bruns immigrated to Freeport, Long Island, New York. JHe worked in the gravel pits of Pennsylvania until 1869 when he became a "drummer" (salesman) for the DuPont Powder Company. Bruns later moved to Indiana and established the Bruns Powder Company to manufacture gunpowder in Terre Haute. He partially owned the Deep Vein Coal Mine Company, located south of the city, which was formed on April 2, 1903 and still operating as of 1977. About 1904, Mr. Bruns moved to Santa Ana, California, for the sake of his wife, Sonia Smith's health. Bruns had a son, Paul H. Bruns.
