Biographical or historical data
Jesse Kilgore Dubois was born January 14, 1811 in Lawrence County, Illinois to Toussaint Dubois. He was elected in 1824 to the Illinois House of Representatives, and re-elected to the lower house in 1836, 1838, and 1842. President William Henry Harrison appointed him as Registrar of the Land Office of Palestine, Illinois in 1841. In 1849, Dubois was appointed receiver of Public Moneys of Palestine, but was removed from office upon the election of President Franklin Pierce in 1853. By 1856, Dubois became a prominent member of the Republican Party, and was elected Illinois Auditor of Public Accounts. In 1868 Dubois ran as the Republican candidate for Governor of Illinois, but lost to John M. Palmer. That same year DuBois was named to the Republican National Executive Committee, and served as delegate to the Republican National Convention. A resident of Springfield, Illinois, Dubois was a close neighbor and life-long friend of Abraham Lincoln. Dubois died on November 22, 1876, and was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. Source: Bateman, Newton. Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois.
