- Biographical or historical data
- James S. Terwilliger was born November 24, 1811 in New York. He moved to Ohio and was living there when he married his first wife, Nancy Ann Carpenter, daughter of George and Susan Carpenter on April 14, 1834. Terwilliger worked as a school teacher and later as a farmer. The family moved to Rising Sun, Ohio County, Indiana where Nancy Ann died on September 22, 1841. On October 2, 1851, he married Elizabeth Harper of Ohio County, Indiana and they had five children: John (1858-1941), Theron, George, Luelle, and Harriet A. (1867-1941). The family later moved to Jefferson County, Indiana.
