Biographical or historical data
The Indianapolis Matinee Musicale was created by Anne Cox and her sister in 1877. Twelve women gathered at Cox's house for an informal meeting regarding music. Two years later, the Parlor Club, which consisted of twenty members, adopted a constitution and decided on the name "The Ladies of Matinee Musicale". The goal of the club was to "raise musical standards and to advance the interest of music". During the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the Indianapolis Matinee Musicale won 1 of 5 medals of honor and was recognized as the oldest music club in the country. In 1895, changes to the club were drafted and included anyone studying music could join as a student member. Notably, men could also join the club. In 1922, a new section was created for professional musicians and music teachers who chose not to be in membership. Today, the Indianapolis Matinee Musicale offers rich experiences for music lovers of all ages. They sponsor performance opportunities and scholarship competitions for students, as well as professional recitals and choral concerts.
