- Summary
- The documents in this collection are copies of correspondence and other materials of George Washington and people in Indianapolis, Indiana as well as others, from historical research conducted by Hubert H. Hawkins. The documents, which span the period between 1776 and 1908, concern Indiana and U.S. history, regarding topics such as the Revolutionary War, Irish immigration, Oregon Territory and Texas, the Civil War, and an account of Kentucky politician Cassius M. Clay killing Cyrus Turner in 1849. The oldest letter, dated June 3, 1776, is to George Washington from General Daniel Morgan in Cambridge, Massachusetts, advising him that "we can spare two regiments for service in your New York Campaign." Another letter from George Washington in the 1790s to John Sinclair in London states: "agriculture and the objects attached to it which have ever been my favorite pursuit that I could wish." There are also several documents that relate to Oliver F. Beyl who, on August 4, 1901, married Beulah B. Makowsky in Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana. Oliver, residing in Memphis, Indiana, received a teacher's license on March 29, 1902, for 12 months, and another license to teach on July 29, 1905, for two years. When living in Jeffersonville, Mr. Beyl received a two-year license to teach on March 28, 1908. The later part of the collection consists of court documents regarding Fish vs. Lattimore from December 1869 and photographs of Governor Townsend and Secretary of State Cordell Hull at a banquet December 5, 1939. Also included are several documents related to John Dillinger, including a report on the Crown Point Jail Break, a copy of the Indianapolis Times 1934/04/18, photographs of Mary Evelyn "Billie" Frechette, and police bulletins with mug shots

- Hubert Howard Hawkins was born in Marion County, Indiana on August 22, 1916 to Albert and Grace Hawkins. He married Hellen Marie Schedat on August 15, 1941. Hawkins was both the director of the Indiana Historical Bureau and the secretary of the Indiana Historical Society, from 1953 to 1976. - John Dillinger was born June 22, 1903, in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a boy he committed petty theft. In 1924 he robbed a grocery store and was caught and jailed. He escaped and he and his gang headed to Chicago to put together one of the most organized and deadly bank robbing gangs in the country. They continued on a crime spree until arrested.
