This collection contains letters, receipts, and other materials from the Pickard and Hopper families, ranging from 1864 to 1975. The Pickard papers, include the correspondence, tax receipts, and bank receipts of Thomas, Henry (Bluford), and Jeff Pickard from 1864 to1931; an Encampment Week letter dated April 4th, 1893 from Evansville, Indiana; a letter to Gorman Pickard from The Home Journal magazine regarding a contest he entered in 1898; a certificate from T.A. Slocum, M.C. for "Psychine"(ca. 1890); Gorman Pickard's teacher's license certificate from 1907.The Hopper family materials include Floyd Hopper's draft registration card from 1940; descriptions of Hazel W. Hopper's Indiana State Library Librarian II position from 1941; Indiana State Personel Division letter from 1942; Hazel Hopper's "25 Years of Service" certificate (1960) and a State of Indiana Department of Public Instruction certificate for "Personal Preparedness in the Nuclear Age" (1963); an invitation to the Wilbur Wright State Memorial dedication (1974); and an invitation to Hazel Hopper's retirement tea (1975).Other items in the collection include an old photo on parchment with "Yours truly, W. T. Moore"; a letter and pamphlet titled "A Talk to Men: Facts of Interest to You" by the Dr. Myers Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a letter from the E.R. Page Company of Marshall, Michigan; postcards from the Superba Co. and the Sterling Co. of Baltimore, Maryland; and a handwritten poem, "Twenty Years Ago"
Biographical or historical data
Hazel W. Hopper was born July 26, 1906 at Columbia City, Indiana to David and Ketura Whiteleather. She received an A.B. degree in 1928 from the University of Washington and an B.S. degree in 1931 from the University of Illinois. She married Floyd Hopper on June 7, 1936. Hazel Hopper worked for the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis, Indiana for 44 years before retiring in 1975. She died at the age of 94 on July 7, 2001.Thomas Pickard was born in Chatham County, North Carolina on March 1, 1812 to Henry and Nancy Pickard. In 1831, he moved to Greene County, Indiana and settled in Highland Township. He married Lucretia Johnson (1814-1873) on February 28, 1934 and they had 10 children. He died on March 22, 1892. His son, Henry Bluford Pickard, was born May 25, 1857 in Greene County, Indiana. He married Ada Nations (1860-1923) on September 24, 1882 and they had two sons. He died on December 6, 1941. Henry's son, Gorman Pickard, was born on December 11, 1883. He married May Jessup (1887-1953) on March 28, 1911 and they had seven children. Gorman died on June 9, 1947.
