- This collection contains a clipping of Harry Dorsey Bertsch's column, "Along the Old Trail", printed in the August 15, 1930 newspaper, The Old Trails Echo (Centerville, Indiana). The article reprinted an April 6, 1838 letter written by Samuel Hannah to his sister-in-law, Mary Bishop Willetts. In the letter, Hannah relates business conditions in Centerville following the Panic of 1837 noting that "Times are very hard. Money is every day becoming scarcer so that it is next to impossible to make collections." A photograph of Mr. Hannah was also printed along with the article

- Samuel Hannah was born December 1, 1789 near Wilmington, Delaware to James and Sarah Hannah. His family moved to Fayette County, Pennsylvania and there he married Eleanor Bishop (1793-1864) in 1811. He moved with his family to Warren County, Ohio in 1815 and then to Wayne County, Indiana in 1817. One of the early pioneers of Indiana, he was a businessman and served his community as the sheriff of Wayne County, the county clerk, a Justice of the Peace, and the postmaster of Centerville. He also served as a member of the Indiana legislature and as Treasure of the State. He was the first president of the Indiana Central Railway (1851-1852) and then served as treasurer of the Indianapolis and Belfontaine Railway Company (1852-1864). - Harry Dorsey Bertsch was born on November 12, 1864 at Centerville, Indiana to Charles and Sarah Bertsch. He married Florence Dickson (1864-1932) in 1892 and they had one daughter.
