Summary
This collection contains a variety of materials from the Hadley, Green, and Johnson familites of Hendricks County, Indiana. The bulk of the collection contains receipts for taxes paid by Elias Hadley, dating from 1828 to 1888. Also included is the will of Elias Hadley, dated 1883, as well as statements from relatives that they had received early legacies from his estate. People taking early legacies included M.D. and N.M. Green, David Hadley, John R. and Sophronia Ballard, Hiram Hadley (son of Elias) and Enos Hadley (son of Elias). The collection also includes the Civil War diary, with transcription, of Hiram Andrew Lindsey Green, dated 1864, along with a deed for the purchase of land by Elisha and Elizabeth Kise of Hendricks County, dated 1835, and other land documents from the Hadley-Green families. The collection also contains a folder of documents relating to several Johnsons, including those of Morgan County, Indiana, Clayton, Hendricks County, Indiana, and Irvington neighborhood in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana are also included. A letter with stock in Butler University are part of those documents, as is a photograph of two men with surname Johnson outside their building in Mooresville, Indiana
Biographical or historical data
Elias Hadley owned property in Hendricks County, Indiana by 1832. He was married to Lucinda Hadley, and had at least seven daughters: Sophronia Ballard, Nancy M. Green, Mary Harden, Jane Green, Emma Wees, Susan Green, and Adalene Hadley. Elias Hadley also had at least two sons, Enos and Hiram. He died sometime before early 1888, based on a receipt dated 1 March 1888 signed by Oscar Hadley, for the recording of Elias Hadley's will. Hiram Andrew Lindsey Green served in the Civil War within the Indiana 12th Regiment, and was related to Elias Hadley by marriage. He later owned land in Pulaski County, Indiana.
