- Biographical or historical data
- American gem expert, George Frederick Kunz, was born in New York City on September 29, 1856 to Johan Gottlieb and Marie Ida Kunz. He became interested in collecting minerals as a boy and by the age of 20 had a collection of about 4,000 specimens. Though a graduate of Cooper Union in New York, he was mostly a self-taught expert in mineralogy and gemology and attained the position of gem expert with Tiffany & Company when he was only 23 years old. He worked for the company for more than 50 years and rose to the position of vice president. He was also an author of many journal articles and several books regarding gemstones, was a founding member of the New York Mineralogical Club, and was active in other scientific societies. He was given honorary degrees from Columbia University, University of Marburg, and Knox University and was also awarded honors by France, Norway, and Japan.
