This collection contains military documents ranging from 1913 to 1922 from Frank W. Buschmann's service as a supply officer with the Indiana National Guard and with the Service of Supply (S.O.S.) during World War I. The collection includes correspondence, memorandums, vouchers, and receipts regarding transfers of military property; documents certifying the cause of death of horses issued to military units; correspondence and documents concerning Buschmann's military assignments while in France; and special orders and requisition regarding the St. Aignan Special Casual Companies. The collection also includes reports and memorandums (April/ May 1918) related to the proposed use of the ship "Gascogne" as a cold storage plant. Blue prints of the Gascogne and a map of Bordeaux with a depiction of a possible railroad spur along the Garonne River are also part of the collection and are housed in oversized folder OBD053
Biographical or historical data
Frank William Buschmann was born July 13, 1890 in Indianapolis to Louis F. and Frances Buschmann. He joined the Indiana National Guard in 1907 and by 1917 he had achieved the rank of captain. He served under Gen. John J. Pershing during the 1916 Punitive Expedition into Mexico, a military action that was undertaken to try and capture Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa. Following the entry of the United States into World War I, Buschmann was drafted in August 1917 and served as a captain with the 150th field artillery, Second Section, General Staff, Service of Supply (S.O.S.) at Bordeaux and Tours; served as adjutant to Major Sidney S. Miller of the 150th during the last months of the war; and was part of St. Aignan Special Casual Company no. 3455 prior to returning to the United States in April 1919. After the war, he moved to Connersville and owned and operated a cigar store. He married Elsabeth Dahne on October 13, 1923 and he adopted her two sons, Donald and Arthur.
