Biographical or historical data
Francis (Frank) Edwin Brownell was born in Troy, New York on July 13, 1840, to Charles and Lucy Brownell, one of six children. He worked as an assistant in the law office of Millard and King until he enlisted, at the age of 20, and became a corporal of Company A of the 11th New York Volunteers, known as the Fire Zouaves, a regiment commanded by Col. Elmer Ellsworth. He was promoted to the rank of Full 2nd Lieutenant on May 14, 1861. When Col. Ellsworth was shot in the back in Alexandria, Virginia by a Southern sympathizer (James W. Jackson) on May 25, 1861, after removing a rebel flag from Jackson's hotel, he then instantly killed Jackson. He was promoted to full sergeant May 26, 1861 and mustered out on July 4, 1861. He was commissioned an officer in the Regular Army, 11th Infantry Regiment July 4, 1861 and promoted to full 1st Lieutenant Oct. 24, 1861. He was mustered out on Nov. 4, 1863. He married Cornelia (Nellie) L. Harrington on May 17, 1865 in St. Louis County, Missouri, and they had 2 children . He was awarded the Medal of Honor on January 26, 1877. His mother and 2 brothers lived with them according to the 1880 census. He died on March 15, 1894 and is buried in St. Louis, Missouri.
