  • "The objective of this study was to determine the distribution, critical habitat, and relative abundance of the Northern copperbelly water snake (Nerodia erythrogaster neglecta, Conant) in the Pigeon Creek watershed in Gibson and Warrick Counties, Indiana. The survey was restrictred to the bottomland floodplain swamp-forests along a 14-mile stretch of Pigeon Creek from the SE edge of Gibson County through Warrick County to Vanderburgh - Warrick County line. The uplands and other adjacent habitat along the stretch has been surface-mined primarily or used for agriculture, dumping, rural residential, other development. The bottomlands surveyed, delineated into 11 study areas 12-400 ha/ea. Along an intermittently continuous wooded strip 400 - 2 - meters wide, have been disturbed to a lesser extent and most areas have recovered for ten years. Past bottomland disturbances are chiefly ditching dredging of Pigeon Creek and most of its trubutaries; selective-cut logging with logging access trails cut; draining and tilling of small sections; minor surface mining; road construction and ROW maintenance; bridge maintenance; residential dumping and others"--Abstract, leaf 1
