Biographical or historical data
Fassett Allen Cotton Was born in Nineveh, Indiana to Marion Irwin and Rachel Amanda (Wright) Cotton on May 1, 1862. He was one of three children. He taught school from 1882-1889 and was a student at Terre Haute State Normal School (now Indiana State University). He was Henry County superintendent of schools from 1889-1895 and served as deputy State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1895-1901. He received an A.B. from Butler University in 1902 and a Ph.B. from the University of Chicago in 1903. He served as Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1903 to 1909. In 1905, Franklin College awarded him the degree of Doctor of Laws to recognize his work to improve Indiana's rural schools. He became the president of the La Crosse Normal School (now University of Wisconsin-La Crosse) in La Crosse, Wisconsin and served from 1909-1924. He was the president of Northern Arizona Normal School (now Northern Arizona University) from 1924-1926. He then traveled and lectured in the west until 1935. In 1936, he became associated with Central Normal College (later Canterbury College, now defunct) in Danville, Indiana until his death in 1942.He married Florence N. Wright in Henry County, Indiana on November 1885, with whom he had three children and who died in 1900. He married Lena L. Dobson on October 14, 1903 in Marion, Indiana. Dr. Cotton died on April 2, 1942 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.Information found within the collection."Central Normal College". Indiana Historical Bureau.
