Biographical or historical data
Evelyn May [Mae] Craig was born to Dr. Albert Gallatin and Laura Houston Craig on February 4, 1875 in Kentucky, the younger of two children. She was graduated from Vassar College in 1897 and spearheaded the drive to establish the Switzerland County Public Library in Vevay, Indiana, resulting in a building partially funded by Andrew Carnegie. She was a trustee of the library for many years, beginning in 1916, serving in various offices. She was a member of the American Library Association and past president of the Indiana Library Trustees Association and wrote a history of the Indiana Public Library Trustees Association (ILTA). She served as county historian of Switzerland County and wrote articles for the Indiana Historical Society's "Encyclopedia of Indiana History." She was also active in the Indiana Federation of Clubs. As ILTA president in 1925, she supported the legislation combining the Public Library Commission and the State Library and placing the organization under the Indiana Library and Historical Board. She died on August 10, 1963 and is buried in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana."Craig, A.G.". 1880 United States Federal Census.
